Black Roses

The Black Roses Project highlights the themes of black womanhood at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU), encompassing how Black women feel around the world. I partnered with The Center for Student Diversity & Inclusion and many Black Organizations at CMU to photograph as many Black female CMU students as possible. The project features 60 black women across all collegiate grade levels, from freshmen to PhD students, and over 100 photos. This photoshoot gave CMU Black women visibility – a space to be open about their struggles and celebrate each other's black girl magic. The photographic portraits illustrate the adversity of Black womanhood and how Black women have used that struggle to build courage, beauty, and emotional strength. Like flowers, Black women flourish despite adversity and possess a rare beauty. Black Roses features powerful imagery, vibrant colors, glowing melanin, and, (of course) lots of flowers!
